Household To-Do List for the New Year
2018 is in full swing, and as a homeowner there are some tasks you can complete that will improve the overall maintenance of your home. Here are some ways to keep things running smoothly this year.
Clean the Dryer Vent
Clogged dryer vents cause an estimated 15,000 house fires a year according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It’s important to clean the dryer vent at least once a year even if you regularly empty the filter. You will need to detach the dryer and use a flexible brush, air compressor or vacuum to remove the build-up. Be sure to clear the whole length of the vent and clean the area around the dryer too.
Flush the Water Heater
Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank can increase the time it takes to heat up, and it can also create cracks in the water heater. The best way to remove the sediment is to flush everything out. You can do this yourself or hire a licensed plumber to help.
Inspect the HVAC System
Getting the furnace and A/C inspected will help extend the life of the system as well as reveal any safety concerns such as carbon monoxide leaks. It can also help cut down on energy bills too.
Change or Clean Furnace Filters
This will allow better heating and improved air quality. Change these monthly during the peak heating and cooling seasons.
Protect the Pipes
Frozen pipes are a big concern as the temperatures drop. Here are a few tips to help:
- Make sure to insulate pipes when possible
- Open cabinet doors that are below the sink on cold days or nights
- Keep the thermostat at a steady temperature
Steam Clean the Microwave
Let’s face it, the microwave doesn’t get enough love when it comes to cleaning. One easy method is to heat a jug of a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water in the microwave for 10 minutes to allow it to steam up. Then remove the jug and wipe down with a rag to reveal the sparkly new interior!
